NATIONAL DIALECT FESTIVAL
The Lakeland Dialect Society was all geared up to host the National Dialect Festival in 2020 and again in 2021 but the event was unable to go ahead. This year (2022) it’s on again and dialect friends from all over the country will be getting together in our glorious county from Friday, October 28th to Sunday, October 30th, 2022 to ensure the eagerly-anticipated fun, and informative, weekend of competitions, discussions and entertainment is upheld. Judges and speakers are still to be confirmed.
The venue chosen by the Lakeland Dialect Society is the picturesque: Shap Wells Hotel, Shap, Penrith, Cumbria, CA10 3QU.
All accommodation, meals and competitions will be held in the hotel which began life as a spa in the 17th century. It was transformed into a larger venue by the Victorians in 1832 as the middle-classes flocked to take the waters. Now it is a modern conference centre and the festival will have exclusive use of a function room for the competitions and meals. Non-dialect spouses and friends are welcome too - they’ll be able to enjoy walks in the nearby Shap fells countryside, or explore the secluded hotel’s 30 acres of surrounding woodland where they could meet some of the colony of native red squirrels which live there.
Shap is just three miles away and Penrith is close-by with a main line railway station. Transport from the station to Shap Wells can be arranged and the hotel is easily accessible by car from Junction 39 of the M6 and the A6. A group booking rate has been arranged of £156 per person for dinner, bed & breakfast on two nights, along with a buffet lunch on the Saturday.
The rate for a single room is £196.
Please print off and complete the booking form on the booking page as soon as possible and send to dialect society secretary Jean Scott-Smith to reserve your room.
It is possible to book for just one night, or attend as a day guest. All meals can be booked separately too, for those attending individual sessions. Please contact Jean for prices relating to these options.
As indicated on the form, please advise when booking if you have mobility issues so that suitable accommodation can be reserved for you and also advise if you have any special dietary requirements.
To secure your place, a deposit of £50 is required. Please send to Jean at Gale View, Main Street, Shap, Penrith, Cumbria, CA10 3NH, along with the booking form. Email Jean using firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any queries, or call her on 01931 716386.
The weekend we have booked is when the clocks go back - so you’ll get an extra hour in bed on Sunday before having to depart!
